Bangkok’s Riverside is where the city’s grandest hotels have stood for over a century. Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, Four Seasons, Capella, and Shangri-La all line the Chao Phraya — many with private piers, Michelin-starred dining, and rooms that open onto Bangkok’s most famous river view. If you want luxury with atmosphere rather than convenience, this is the area.
Why Stay on the Riverside
The river itself is the reason. Sunset cocktails over the Chao Phraya, longtail boat trips to the Grand Palace, and rooms that face Wat Arun across the water — these aren’t experiences you can replicate in Sukhumvit. Riverside hotels also tend to be larger, with sprawling pool gardens and full resort facilities you don’t usually find in city-center towers.
Honest trade-off: the Riverside is not BTS-friendly. Most luxury hotels here rely on hotel shuttle boats from Saphan Taksin BTS (the only Riverside-adjacent BTS stop) or taxis to reach Sukhumvit and Siam. The shuttle boats are part of the experience for the Mandarin, Peninsula, and Shangri-La — but plan an extra 20–30 minutes for any trip to Bangkok’s mall and dining districts.

East bank — Charoen Krung / Bang Rak — Where the historic luxury sits. Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La, Royal Orchid Sheraton, Lebua, Capella. Closest to BTS Saphan Taksin, walkable to Asiatique. Best for first-time Riverside visitors.
West bank — Thonburi side — Quieter and more dramatic, with hotels facing the city skyline. Peninsula, Millennium Hilton, Avani+, Anantara Riverside. Most rely on hotel shuttle boats. Best for the most cinematic river views.
Old city — Rattanakosin / Tha Tien — The cultural heart, near Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and the Grand Palace. Sala Rattanakosin, Riva Arun, Sala Arun. Best for travelers prioritizing temple sights and atmosphere over modern amenities.
Chinatown — Yaowarat — Within walking distance of the river, Bangkok’s most atmospheric food district. Shanghai Mansion is the standout. Best for food-first travelers.
